BIM 6D: Enhancing Construction Sustainability

Updated: Aug 31, 2023

The construction sector is on the cusp of transformation in manufacturing processes, with a focus on sustainable development challenges in the years to come. Both public policies and private interests are aligning to prioritize the execution of measures that address these challenges. Amidst this landscape, construction activities stand out as a significant source of pollution, necessitating a concerted effort to minimize their impact on future generations. This call for change is gaining momentum alongside the increasing drive to steer designs toward achieving zero carbon consumption.

Throughout history, human settlements have shared a common mission: to learn from past experiences to avoid repeating mistakes. In recent years, the digitization of data, integration of information, and automation of processes have accelerated the adoption of higher standards, optimizing desired conditions for progress.

Key documents, such as Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Data Acquisition Protocols (DAPs), play a crucial role in this endeavor. EPDs encompass measurable and verifiable data that assess a product's environmental impact across its lifecycle. This analysis covers factors such as energy consumption, resource depletion, water usage, solid waste, climate change, atmospheric acidification, and more. These assessments adhere to ISO 14040 and 14044 Standards, which coincide with protocols shared by ISO 19650.

Energy certifications such as LEED, Passive Haus, BREEAM, and CES are continually evolving to encompass critical aspects like a building's thermal envelope, detailed climatic zone divisions, and carbon footprint calculations for operational phases. These certifications, along with an incentivized scoring system, fuel innovation in sustainable design.

The prevailing trend is the integration of this wealth of information through the application of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology. BIM encompasses discipline coordination, phased execution planning, budget considerations, and energy analysis. This integration is pivotal in evaluating project behavior by combining various performance-affecting factors. Additionally, it provides essential documentation for Facility Management during a building's maintenance phase, enriching future design processes and generating valuable assets.

Fostering seamless database integration necessitates the development of Application Program Interfaces (APIs). These interfaces bridge different reading formats, facilitating the interoperability of model information across scenarios. As the construction industry faces its challenges, a shift towards environmental consciousness is not only shaping infrastructure but also influencing societal practices.
